How to Wire Wrap Jewelry

You can fulfill your inner muse by wrapping wire around a stone, crystal, or a bead. Or you can wrap wire around an old CPU, electrical component, or computer component. Then link it to a bracelet, necklace, or ring. If computer parts for jewelry sounds geeky, then you're trending. There is a new genre in jewelry making. It’s called "Geek Jewelry."

Handcrafted wire art jewelry uses high quality wire which is filled with 14 Karat gold, sterling silver, copper, or brass. First you make a scroll to link to a gem. Cut into two inch length a sterling silver filled wire. With needle nose pliers make a loop at each end. Then with flat nose pliers, rotate the loop until you reach the middle of the wire. Do this on the other end too. Then, flatten the scroll with a mallet three or four times. Afterward, you can use steel wool to brighten the silver scroll. Now you’re ready to link the gemstone.

If you have a necklace, you can add a pendant to it. With needle nose pliers, make a small loop or a curl at the end of a two inch wire. Add a bend in the wire so that the curl will hang down nicely. Then wrap the wire around the gem. After attaching the gem to the wire, you can wrap it to the necklace. Make sure that you wrap the gem with wire right in the middle of the necklace. To make bracelets, chokers, or necklaces, you can buy chains at the store; then embellish them with smoky quartz, pearls, or beads wrapped intermittently onto the chain.
